Remote Online Notarization

Remote Online Notarization, commonly called RON, allows eligible electronic documents to be notarized through a secure audio-video platform. The signer and electronic notary meet online instead of at the same physical location.

This service can be a convenient option for clients who are traveling, live outside Hampton Roads, have limited mobility, or need an eligible document notarized without arranging an in-person appointment.

Depending on the document and receiving organization, RON may be suitable for:

  • Affidavits

  • Powers of attorney

  • Business documents

  • Consent and authorization forms

  • Real estate-related documents

  • Acknowledgments and Jurats

  • Certain certified electronic copies

  • Other documents accepted electronically by the receiving organization

Common Documents

You will generally need:

  • The complete electronic document

  • An unexpired, qualifying government-issued photo ID

  • A computer or compatible mobile device

  • A working camera and microphone

  • A reliable internet connection

  • Access to email

  • A private, well-lit location

  • The ability to complete the platform’s identity-verification process

What to prepare

Not every document or receiving agency accepts remote online notarization. Customers are responsible for confirming acceptance with the document’s recipient.

The Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth currently states that it cannot issue an Apostille or Great Seal authentication for an electronic notarization. Documents requiring a Virginia apostille should not be completed through RON.

Important Information

  1. Submit the document and appointment information for review.

  2. Receive a secure session invitation from the approved RON platform.

  3. Upload or verify the document.

  4. Complete the platform’s identity-verification requirements.

  5. Join the live audio-video session.

  6. Electronically sign the document as instructed.

  7. The electronic notarial certificate and seal are applied.

  8. Download or receive the completed electronic document.

How it works

Before scheduling, confirm that the organization receiving the document(s) accepts electronic signatures and remote online notarization.
